Lesson Four: Nobody Cares

“Some people have set out to get me, and they’ve succeeded. Karmically, they will be retributed. The universe speaks louder than I do.” Fuck your karma. That’s not what it’s about. That is a dirty and perverted version of something beautiful. Here’s what karma is about; do good things, and good things will happen to you. It’s not an exact science, sometimes good things happen to bad people, we all know this. But on the whole, I really think that if you try to do good things for people, you’ll find that you’re a happier person generally. Not because good things will then happen to you, as a reward for good behaviour, but because doing good is its own reward. Maybe that’s kind of trite, but on the whole, I think I’m OK with that.

Here’s what karma is not about; it’s not about not letting the bastards get you down because they’ll get what’s coming to them. It’s not about “people should be nice to me, because if they’re not, karma will have words with them”. Karma is not your older brother, waiting to beat up the kids that are mean to you. Karma doesn’t care. Karma’s got its own shit to deal with, just like everybody else. Which is, ultimately, the lesson here; nobody is out to get you. That guy in the Toyota, his sister’s just been in a rock climbing accident, and the doctors say it’s not looking good, and if he doesn’t get to the hospital soon, he might never get the chance to say he’s sorry. That girl at the ATM, she’s just lost her job, and she has bills to pay and no idea how she’s going to pay them, and now this fucking machine is telling her that the number she is typing is not her PIN, and she has used her three tries, but it is her PIN, it’s always been her PIN, and it turns out that her credit card got cloned a week ago, and some bastard is merrily spending the money she doesn’t have in Paris. And the woman behind the counter at Tesco? Well, she is trying to steal from you. You got that one right. But it’s not because it’s you. She doesn’t know who you are, and she doesn’t care. Nobody cares. Embrace it.
